Changing Culture and Beliefs

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.  Phillipians 1:9-11

From Donna

The girls played Scattergories to illustrate traits of our ever changing culture.

Donna displayed pictures and brought in an array of phones to show the progression of the telephone technology.  We all want the newest, smallest, fastest tech objects with the most functions.

We live in a “Postmodern” world with fast technological changes.  Postmodernism refers to reassessment of one’s perspective, beliefs, and ideas about culture, identity, history, or language.  Society has evolved from traditional virtues of right and wrong to the belief of tolerance and relative truth.  Today, the world philosophy is aimed to achieve inner peace and happiness living in a chaotic world with no absolutes for truth.  God is no longer considered sovereign, and individuals look to themselves for their own destiny and desires.  Life is defined by seeking external simulation for pleasure thru possessions.  People also seek “belonging” in a community and something real.

Christians need to exhibit the “real” love of Christ to this postmodern world with:

  • A church community body accepting all individuals but not ignoring God’s Word about sin.
  • Seeking to reach individuals with God’s absolute truth of the Gospel
  • Being real in our Christian livelihood and character

The above chapel in Yosemite National Park is an example of today’s culture.  On the day we visited, for some reason, they covered up the cross in the worship center.  Why would a church cover the cross which is the symbol of the Christian faith. Not sure why this occurred, but it is symbolic of society’s preference to also cover the cross to be politically correct.

In a world with no absolutes, we need to be absolutely genuine to show that God is real.
